Hurricane Irene 2011

Hurricane Irene definitely left an impact to Washington but many of the volunteers in the Fire Department and EMS met the challenge along with Town Highway and the Police.

Washington Fire Department and Washington Ambulance worked together on a coordinated effort with Town Highway and the Police to continue services.

The decision was made to start staffing the Fire Department at midnight on Sunday. At 6am on Sunday, Litchfield County Dispatch declared a Wide Area Emergency which meant that each department had to take and dispatch their own calls.

The Fire Department, Town Highway, and the Police worked tirelessly throughout the entire night and all day Sunday to maintain emergency services for the residents of Washington. Although there was many a basement flooded, many trees down, electrical services impacted, the volunteer services were up to the challenge and continued to meet the needs of the citizens.
