Training
Training is a very important component of EMS. There are certain, minimum requirements that we have for continuing education. Our EMT's and MRT's must take yearly refresher classes in areas such as HAZMAT, CPR, and Defibrillation. We also have other training for Mass Casualty Incidents, Trauma Assessment, and Airway Management. During a typical year, each of our EMT's and MRT's will train 20 hours or more.
This does not include the initial EMT class (at least 150 hours) or recertification every two to three years. it gives you an opportunity particpate in your community and fill an important role for the town where your live. Washington Ambulance is an EMT level service and we are always looking for EMT's and MRT's to round out our roster.
In order for our members to maintain their certification, they must recertify every 2 to 3 years. Our members also must take the following continuing education; HAZMAT, epinepherin administration, bloodbourne pathogen awareness, AED (Automated External Defibrillation), and CPR.
Other Washington Ambulance Association Member Obligations are:
1. Attend a minimum of 50% of the regular Monthly Meetings and Special Operation meetings.
2. Attend a minimum of 50% of drills.
3. Be current in the following; CPR, Epi/Defib, HAZMAT, Bloodborne pathogen, and any other training the Association has deemed necessary for the operation of our service.
4. Be current in any other training required by the State of Connecticut, Medical Control, or Standard Operating Procedures.
5. Meet the physical fitness requirements set out in the Operations and Procedures Manual.
6. Be able to respond to calls when available.
7. Participate in at least 10 patient calls per year.
8. Participate in at least two community service activities per year.
Training is important to keep our skills sharp, learn new techniques, and how we can work with the Fire Department.
